Naeem Oba. Real music for real people.

Naeem Oba, revolutionary emcee,
was born in one of America's original housing projects, “The
Mississippi Courts” in North Minneapolis. As the son of a single
mother, with an abandoned federal prison in his backyard, Naeem found himself immersed in the struggles of inner city poverty from the
beginning. When Naeem was five, one of his mother's friends brought over a piece of vinyl titled The Message (Grandmaster Flash and the
Furious Five). From that moment on, every aspect of Naeem's life has been submerged in the hip-hop culture. At age 15, Naeem read The
Autobiography of Malcolm X (Alex Haley), which inspired him to begin
his life's journey as a revolutionary emcee. Today Naeem stands
prepared to begin his assault on Babylon as he translates the plight
and struggles of inner city youth in a colonial society. With his debut
LP, Unorthodox, in the works, based on George Orwell's classic novel,
1984, featuring production by a who's who of hip-hop's elite producers (!LLMiND, Jake One, DJ Khalil, NOTTZ, King Karnov & Khrysis) Naeem intends to put creativity
back at the forefront of hip-hop music. Naeem's current projects
include: "The Symbolism Mixtape" "The King and I" EP, "You Are Not One of Us" EP (Naeem Oba and BrikAbrak) and coming soon, Naeem Oba vs. King Karnov- "MPLS Joe"

Review/ Free Banger!

Freeloader: "I Don't Know" by Brikabrak and Naeem Oba

1201_brikabrak.JPG

Earlier today, we posted a Q&A with Brikabrak and Naeem Oba, and now we present you with a free track from the pair to download. Built upon a beat laid down by King Karnov, the track, "I Don't Know," centers on Naeem Oba's rhymes, which he recorded at CCM studios on Colfax, and Brikabrak's dexterous turntable work. The track is slated to appear as a bonus cut on Oba's forthcoming King and I EP and on an impending mixtape alongside songs from much higher profile artists that Karnov has worked with such as Busta Rhymes, RZA, GZA and Raekwon, among others. According to Brik, the cuts will be blended into a seamless mix by another local up-and-comer, DJ Ear Attent. You Are Not One of Us, meanwhile, the first release from Brikabrak and Oba, which is halfway completed, will follow, as will a full-length from the former, titled The Unorthodox, a hip-hop recreation of George Orwell's 1984. That last one features a beat made by Illmind of G-Unit Records.

Counter Culture by Naeem Oba

Since it's humble conception in 1976, Hip Hop music has become a world-wide artistic staple. It is the symbolic voice of people oppressed and ostracized by the American power structure. As with Jazz and Rock and Roll before it, once broad scale acceptance is obtained, there becomes a natural regression from an art forms initial purpose. In the case of Hip Hop, corporate involvement is the undisputed catalyst for a drifting from the outrage and contempt that fueled the genre's creativity. In a blatant attempt to pander to a larger audience, "mainstream" hip hop, produces the equivalent of social stereotypes for mass consumption. This "watering down" of the culture has sparked an intense backlash from artist and fans alike, who demand a return to the purity of the art. This counter culture, is known as "underground" hip hop, and is a stark contrast to the over indulgence displayed on television. The "underground" counter culture, concerns itself primarily with the structural injustices that plague the black and brown communities.

Naeem Oba

Out of Colorado by way of Murderapolis, Mn

Ok I'm very hyped about this artist. I have come to find out that Illmind(one of my favorite producers) is executively producing his album "Unorthodox". In addition these producer are most likely going to be on the album Jake One (G Unit, De La Soul), Black Milk (Pharoe Monch, Slum Village, Busta Rhymes), Khrysis (Little Brother, Sean P), King Karnov (Bishop Lamont, Rakim) Soundtrakk (Lupe Fiasco) and possibly Madlib. Everything from his Lyrical delivery to his beat selections is on point. Trust me you will not be dissapointed.

The Symbolism Mixtape

Symbolism Mixtape Review.

NAEEM OBA SYMBOLISM MIXTAPE

Most of you have heard of Naeem Oba by now if not by way of searching myspace then by way of his work with local MC Whygee... So from Minneapolis Minnesota In honor of Dead Prez - Let's Get Free... TCCR gives you Naeem Oba's Symbolism Mixtape... This release is Colorado Rap Report Type shit! Revolutionary Hood Music with a meaning. I would like to start off by saying this mixtape is full of classic beat selection(Dilla Joints)... Naeem takes time to touch on a lot of subjects on this mixtape from Religion... to the reasons to "Shoot Your TV" ...If I was to suggest a track that defines the tone of the mixtape it would be "Out There" with lines like "Vain Image Like Christ Painted White" and "Angel With Broken Wings Love To Smoke And Drink" Oba's Educated Militant Approach to Hip Hop is one that reminds the listener of passionate Alex Jones Radio Show or that Famous William Cooper Novel "Behold A Pale Horse" we all know and love. This Mixtape Screams Black In America...
